Elizabeth Manley

Elizabeth Manley is a Canadian figure skating legend and 1988 Olympic silver medalist. When reflecting on memorable Canadian Olympic performances, Canadian figure skater, _ had a performance for the ages in the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Manley’s on ice spectacle, one so widely recognized as a very special performance that announcer ABC sports announcer Jim McKay said, “Wouldn’t it be great if every human being could have a moment like this once in their lives?”

Manley, who at the 1988 Calgary Olympics, won the long program, but ultimately finished in second place behind East German skater Katarina Witt, coming incredibly close to taking the gold medal despite delivering a near-perfect performance; essentially, she “came within a fraction of a point of beating Witt for the Olympic title.”.

The 1988 World Championships were also a close competition. Manley placed second in the figure skating competition, but was just fourth in short program. She then finished second in the free skating for the silver medal overall.

Manley chose to end her competitive career in amateur skating with the Olympic and world championship silver medals.
