For Glenroy Gilbert, he competed in four Summer Olympics as an athlete – 1988 in Seoul for long jump (22nd), 1992 in Barcelona for the men’s 4X100 metre relay (did not finish, semifinal), 1996 in Atlanta for men’s 4X100 metre relay (gold medal) and for the 100 metres (22nd), and 2000 in Sydney for men’s 4X100-metre relay (11th).
One of Gilbert’s athletic highlights, was the memorable performance of the Canadian relay team he was a part of in the Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympic Games. In a true photo finish, the Canadian relay team beat the United states by almost a half a second to establish itself as the best relay team in the world.
After retiring from competing, Gilbert passed on his knowledge to the next generation of Canadian athletes as a coach. As an event coach, his athletes won four of the five medals Canada Athletics earned at the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Games.
