Recipients of the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship 2025

Continuing its commitment to supporting young student-athletes, the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame is proud to announce the 2025 scholarship recipients. This year, two outstanding students have been selected through the Alliance of Educators for Black Students (AEBS), in partnership with the York Region District School Board and under the continued leadership of retired educator Charlotte Reid.

Janae Layne, Unionville HS 

Janae Layne is a dedicated indoor and beach volleyball player. She is a key player on her team having achieved bronze at the 2025 Ontario Volleyball Association provincial championships, a bronze in 2024 and a gold in 2023. She is recognized as a leader both on and off the court, always striving to bring out the best in her teammates.

She has continually fostered positive relationships with teammates, coaches, parents, and even opposing players, creating a supportive and respectful environment.

Kallai thomas, Woodbridge College

Kallai is in the French Immersion Program at Woodbridge College. His academic achievements include being on the Honour Roll every year achieving over 90% in his  top six university courses. He has been accepted into the seven universities that he applied to. He is also an exceptional athlete and has balanced his academics with sports activities. While in high school, Kallai played football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and track and field.

As a member of the senior basketball team, they won the York Region Athletic Association title and represented the York Region District School Board at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations’ Championship Tournament.  As well as being a leader, Kallai is a mentor in the  community. He was  the assistant coach for the U14 House League Team for the Brampton Minor Basketball Association and volunteered in a basketball program called Heroes Camp for students in Grades 1-8.
