Our 1997 OSHOF inductee, Al Balding would win an impressive number of tournaments in many different venues over a long period of time during his career. He won ten events on the Canadian Tour from 1952 through 1973. He won four tournaments on the PGA Tour, the most of any Canadian to that point.

In 1968, in Italy, Balding won the World Cup team title for Canada (with George Knudson), as well as the individual title.

Michael Burgess, our OSHOF 2014 Sandy Hawley recip

Michael Burgess, our OSHOF 2014 Sandy Hawley recipient, was a Canadian actor and tenor singer, best known for his portrayal of Jean Valjean in the Toronto production of Les Misérables and was the former anthem singer of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Burgess was the first individual to sing the Canadian National Anthem at the baseball World Series, in Atlanta in 1992.

Our OSHOF 2017 Syl Apps award winner, Penny Oleksiak is a Canadian competitive swimmer and rose to fame during the 2016 Summer Olympics.

While competing in the 2016 games, she became the first Canadian to win four medals in the same Summer Games, and the country's youngest Olympic champion with her gold medal win in the 100 m freestyle.

Widely considered the face of a resurgent Canadian women's swimming team in the 2010s, Oleksiak is also Canada's most-decorated athlete at the World Aquatics Championships, and a multi-medalist at the World Swimming Championships, World Junior Championships, and Commonwealth Games.

Did you know that 2019 OSHOF inductee Joe Primeau

Did you know that 2019 OSHOF inductee Joe Primeau won a Stanley Cup both as a player and as a coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Primeau was part of the famous "Kid Line" along with Charlie Conacher (OSHOF 2013 inductee) and Harvey "Busher" Jackson. The trio were all raised in Toronto and they worked together to help the Maple Leafs win the 1932 Stanley Cup and lead the Leafs to four more Stanley Cup finals appearances over the next six years.

When they first came together as a line in late 1929, Primeau was the oldest at 23 years old, while Jackson and Conacher were both 18.

Very Happy Birthday wishes to Darryl Sitler our OSHOF 2003 inductee and 2012 Sandy Hawley winner.

Sittler is a former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League from 1970 until 1985 for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings.

On February 7, 1976 in a game between Toronto and Boston at Maple Leaf Gardens, Sittler set an NHL record that still stands by tallying 6 goals and adding 4 assists for 10 points. All his points were scored against rookie goalie Dave Reece in an 11-4 Maple Leaf victory.

Our 2015 OSHOF inductee, Garney Henley was voted the sixth greatest CFL player in a poll conducted by Canadian Sports network TSN in 2006.

Henley had an impressive 16-year career (1960 to 1975) within the CFL. In his early Tiger-Cat career, Henley was used mostly as a defensive back. In his later years with the Tiger-Cats, he played more commonly as a wide receiver.

As a defensive back, Henley intercepted 59 passes for 916 yards and 5 touchdowns, and was selected as an All Star nine times. Following Henley's transition into an offensive player, he was an All Star for the 10th time in 1972 as a wide receiver. He won the CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award in 1972 in which the Tiger-Cats won the Grey Cup at their home field, Ivor Wynne Stadium, in Hamilton, Ontario.

Very Happy Birthday wishes to Brooke Henderson, our OSHOF 2015 Syl Apps Award winner.

Henderson won her first major at age 18 in 2016 at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, becoming the event's youngest winner.

With 12 LPGA wins as of July 2022, Henderson has the most victories of any Canadian golfer on major professional tours. She won her second career major title at the 2022 Evian Championship.

We would like to extend our condolences as Queen Elizabeth II, Canada’s Head of State has passed away at age 96.

Harnarayan Singh, our 2018 Brian Williams Media Aw

Harnarayan Singh, our 2018 Brian Williams Media Award winner is a Canadian sports announcer and journalist.

In 2009, Singh began announcing National Hockey League games in the Punjabi language for Hockey Night in Canada. Singh had one of his games turn into a viral video in 2016 when he made an energetic call of goal-scorer Nick Bonino's name.

He was the first person to announce an NHL game in Punjabi for television, and in 2016, became the first Sikh Canadian to broadcast an NHL game in English.

Happy birthday wishes goes out to our 2022 Inductee & 2009 Syl Apps Award Winner, Daniel Nestor.

He is one of the foremost doubles players in tennis history due to his longevity and continued success at the top of the men's game. Nestor was continuously ranked in the top 100 in doubles from April 1994 to April 2018, a total of 1134 consecutive weeks.

His 91 men's doubles titles make him the third-most decorated champion among doubles players. Nestor was the first player in doubles tennis history to win every Grand Slam and Masters Series event, the Year End Championships and Olympic gold medal at least once in his career, an achievement that has since been matched by the Bryan brothers.

Very Happy Birthday wishes to Scott Moir, our 2019 Syl Apps Award winner!

Moir is highly recognized for his accomplishments and memorable performances with ice dance partner Tessa Virtue.

Virtue and Moir were paired in 1997, at the ages of seven and nine. They were the 2004 Canadian junior champions and became Canada's top ice dance team in 2007. They are the 2008 World silver medalists and the 2009 World bronze medalists and became the first ice dance team to receive a 10.0 for a program component score under the new ISU Judging System.

In 2010, they became the first ice dancers from North America to win an Olympic gold medal, ending the 34-year streak of the Europeans. Virtue and Moir are the youngest ice dance team ever to win an Olympic title, the first ice dancers to win a gold medal in their Olympic debut, and the first ice dance team to win Olympic gold on home ice.

Having skated together for over twenty years, Virtue and Moir are the longest-standing ice dance partnership in Canadian history.

Our OSHOF 2004 inductee Wayne Gretzky played 20 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for four teams from 1979 to 1999.

Nicknamed "the Great One", he has been called the greatest hockey player ever by many sportswriters, players, the NHL itself, based on extensive surveys of hockey writers, ex-players, general managers and coaches

Gretzky is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season, a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, Gretzky tallied over 100 points in 16 professional seasons, 14 of them consecutive.

At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held 61 NHL records: 40 regular season records, 15 playoff records, and 6 All-Star records

Our 2012 OSHOF inductee, Tommy Burns is the first Canadian born World Heavyweight Boxing Champion.

When Burns met Marvin Hart for the heavyweight championship of the world in Los Angeles on February 23, 1906, Burns was a 2-1 underdog and the betting was 10-7 that he would not last ten rounds. Burns won a 20-round decision and went on to defend his title eleven times within a period of less than three years.

Our 2011 OSHOF inductee Doug Gilmour, had a memora

Our 2011 OSHOF inductee Doug Gilmour, had a memorable 1988-89 NHL season, as he tied Hakan Loob for second in team scoring with 85 points, as the Flames won the Presidents' Trophy as the top regular season in the NHL.

Gilmour played a pivotal role in the Flames' run to the 1989 Stanley Cup Final; he was particularly effective in Calgary's second round series against the Los Angeles Kings where he scored or assisted on key goals in three of the four games while playing an effective role in preventing the Kings' star Wayne Gretzky from establishing his own offensive game.

Gilmour recorded 11 goals and 11 assists in 22 games during the Flames' playoff run. In the sixth game of the final, against the Montreal Canadiens, he scored two goals – including the championship winning tally – in a 4–2 victory that clinched the Flames first Stanley Cup.

Happy birthday wishes to our OSHOF 2013 inductee Pat Gillick. He was one of the architects of the Toronto Blue Jays dynasty in the late 1980s and early 90s.

He previously served as the general manager of four MLB teams: the Toronto Blue Jays (1978-1994), Baltimore Orioles (1996-1998), Seattle Mariners (2000-2003), and Philadelphia Phillies (2006-2008).

As Toronto's general manager, Gillick won five division titles (1985, 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1993) and led the club to their first World Series championships in 1992 and 1993 and later his third World Series ring with the Phillies in 2008.

In 27 seasons as a GM, Gillick’s teams held a winning record 20 times and reached the postseason in 11. In 2008, and in 2011 he got the call to be enshrined in the National baseball Hall of Fame.

No Canadian has played in more Major League Baseball games than Joey Votto.

The Cincinnati Reds first baseman appeared in his 1,989th major-league game Sunday, an 8-5 win over the Chicago Cubs. That broke the previous mark, which had been held by Larry Walker of Maple Ridge, B.C.
